Rick Ralston has a passion for collecting, restoring and refurbishing what might otherwise be lost. By the time he leased the Lahaina Inn building, it had fallen into badrepair – another buyer would have demolished it and started over on the prime property. Rick chose to restore the structure. His vision was to create a late 1800s inn, filled with treasures from his extensive antique collection.

The restoration proved grueling. For more than 24 months the structure was closed while the intricate details of a period restoration were determined through vigorousresearch, the floors were reinforced, and electrical wiring and plumbing were completely replaced. The lobby stairs incorporated a balustrade taken from a mansion.

The original 19 rooms became 12 rooms with private baths, more windows and private verandas. Each of the rooms was individually decorated – 12 styles of period wallpaperand 12 coordinating patterns in the bed covers and sheets. Modern conveniences added include central air conditioning, private baths, in-room classical music and phones. No television sets distract from the ambiance. In December 1989, the newly restored Lahaina Inn emerged, exuding all the romance and nostalgic ambience in an inn at theturn of the century.

The structure was built in 1938 by Tomezo Masuda – for his Maui Trading Company, Ltd., a general merchandise store. The store was a popular gathering place for Army menstationed on Maui during WW II, and became legendary for Masuda’s black German Shepherd named “Dickie”, who set out on his own each afternoon to the LahainaPost Office to fetch the store’s mail. In 1949, Masuda sold his business to the Tabata family. When their business failed in the early 1960’s, the building was bought atpublic auction by George Izaki. Mr. Izaki sub-divided the street level store into four separate business spaces, changed the second floor into a hotel, and added porchesthe length of the hotel, front and back on the second floor. Disaster struck in the mid – 60’s with a fire that destroyed the business spaces and the upstairs rooms. Onlythe original “frontier storefront” facade escaped serious damage. Reconstruction yielded 19 new rooms and three baths on the second floor which ultimatelybecame known as the Lahainaluna Hotel. The 1970s and ’80s were not kind to the Lahainaluna Hotel. It had decayed to a “fleabag” joint, an eyesore with a rowdy bar downstairs, when Rick rescued it in1986. His labor of love was completed several years later and renamed the Lahaina Hotel, then in 1994, the Lahaina Inn.
