I am appalled at the recent announcement that you have chosen to run for APFA Vice President.  As you may recall, in June 2002, I resigned from the APFA Safety Committee after 10 years of proudly serving our membership. That resignation was due to the actions of the majority of the APFA National Officers, specifically the President who appoints the Coordinators, and the lack of a practical selection process for the position of National Safety Coordinator. Included in my resignation letter, I committed to completing the accident investigation of AAL Flight 587.In August of 2002 my personal schedule included flying my trips, working on a memorial garden for Ken and Jennifer Lewis, assisting with the development of the DCA Peer Support for the first remembrance of 9/11, and focusing on a NASA Turbulence Project. I was not working for APFA in August 2002. However, to my surprise, I received a phone call from Flight Service that month informing me that ‘someone’ was watching my flight schedule. After the chills stopped running down my spine I immediately asked who would have any interest in my schedule and was told that in fact “Ted Bedwell” had called Flight Service requesting information on why I was ‘special-assignment’ trip removed for a two-day trip. After I left several messages for you at the APFA Safety Department where you were working, Joann Matley, APFA National Safety Coordinator, finally returned my phone call. I requested that you and Joann be on speaker phone. The conversation that subsequently occurred was very disturbing. I am sure you recall my asking Joann if you were working for her on behalf of APFA. When she confirmed that fact, I then asked if you had, in fact, called Flight Service regarding my “special-assignment” trip removal.Ted, you admitted to calling and requesting information regarding my schedule. This, as I reminded you, is not only a breach of SABRE privilege afforded union representatives at APFA Headquarters, but also a breach of privacy. You had no right to investigate my status, particularly due to the fact that I was not working for APFA the month of August 2002. Joann Matley admitted to pulling my schedule up to see if I might be attending a conference call for the NASA project rather than calling me and asking me herself; then “somehow”, my schedule was printed and “somehow” it appeared on her desk. Conveniently, that afforded you the opportunity to review my schedule and make that fatal phone call to Flight Service. This whole incident escalated, when, after my request for an apology to Flight Service (this was an embarrassment for APFA and specifically the Safety Department) as well as to me, your response included an apology to Flight Service only. The behavior you displayed that day as well as several other indications of your character through the years is not conducive to holding the office of APFA Vice President. For these reasons, I refuse to support your efforts in this newest endeavor of yours.
